Compostable Certification Test

Mérieux NutriSciences AQ provides packaging testing for the European, North American, and Australian compostable certifications.

Increasing consumer concerns about sustainability and regional initiatives to reduce plastic pollution are inviting organizations to adopt certified compostable packaging. The APCO (Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation) has worked closely with the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, WRAP, and 60 local businesses to develop the ANZPAC Plastic pact that aims at a circular economy for plastics.

One of the ambitious targets of the pact is to have 100% of plastic used in packaging to be reusable, recyclable, or compostable by 2025. Developing green packaging alternatives is becoming a strategic priority for manufacturers.

Composability standards and certification marks in Australia:

  • the Australian standards AS 5810-2010 linked to the “home compostable” seedling logo of ABA (Australasian Bioplastics Association)
  • the Australian standards AS 4736-2006 linked to the “industrial compostable” seedling logo of ABA

TÜV Austria and DIN CERTCO are certifications bodies internationally recognized to deliver compostability certification (e.g. home OK compost logo, industrial TUV compostable logo). The Seedling logo is a registered trademark owned by European Bioplastics and administered by the Australasian Bioplastics Association (ABA) in Australia. It proves that the product’s claims of biodegradability and compostability as per Australian Standards have been tested  (Australasian Bioplastics, 2017)
