Australia and New Zealand open the debate on mandatory front-of-pack nutrition labeling on food
Australia and New Zealand are considering making front-of-pack nutrition labelling mandatory on food.

The Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) agency has launched a public consultation to assess a possible amendment to the Australian and New Zealand Food Code that would require the inclusion of the “Health Star Rating” symbol on food products marketed in both countries.
The proposal, submitted under section 72 of the Food Standards Australia New Zealand Act 1991 (FSANZ Act), seeks to strengthen the nutritional information available to consumers and improve the protection of public health through a more transparent and effective regulatory system.
FSANZ has invited citizens, businesses, and other stakeholders to submit their views through its digital platform, Consultation Hub. The deadline for submitting input is June 21, 2026, at 23:59 Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST).
